This year’s Mews Fest will introduce an entirely new addition to the free May Bank Holiday programme, as the festival unveils its first ever Mews Fest Fringe inside Great Northern Warehouse.

Running across Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th May from 12pm to 7pm, the free Fringe event will transform Unit 5 inside the main warehouse into a laid back creative hub bringing together music, independent retail, live art and family friendly activities across the weekend.

Developed as an extension of Mews Fest’s grassroots ethos, the space will feature DJs soundtracking the day alongside seating areas, market stalls and pop ups from bands, artists, makers and collectors from across Manchester’s independent creative scene.

Visitors can browse vinyl and records from Hydra Vinyl, while local illustrator and printmaker cpdwg will showcase a range of quirky hand drawn fine art prints playing with scale and perspective. Manchester based artist Toni Miller Paints will also bring discounted and ex exhibition works to the Fringe, alongside Sally Marshall Art, whose mixed media creations span everything from painted skateboards and mirrors to drumskins, trainers and prints.

Plant lovers can stop by Rosedale Botanics for houseplants, pots and accessories, while artist Sarah Betts will host live speed portrait sessions on Deansgate Mews, giving visitors the chance to have hand drawn portraits completed in as little as five minutes. Elsewhere, urban sketch artist Sophie Nixon will be selling original sketches and prints celebrating Manchester’s iconic buildings, pubs and venues.

Alongside the market stalls, the Fringe will also host a number of interactive workshops and installations throughout the weekend. A free badge-making workshop and guitar-decorating sessions will run for both adults and kids alike, while the large scale Chaos Canvas installation invites visitors to contribute to a giant collaborative artwork by drawing directly onto the walls using thousands of crayons provided inside the space.

The Mews Fest Fringe will run alongside the wider Mews Fest programme across Deansgate Mews, with both events completely free to attend.

This Bank Holiday Weekend is set to be the first proper scorcher of 2026, and Great Northern are welcoming the warmer weather in style with the return of the free weekend-long Mews, bringing three days of live music, indie creative culture, family activities and food and drink to Deansgate Mews and beyond.

Taking place from Saturday 23rd-Monday 25th May, the open-to-all extravaganza will once again champion grassroots music and local creatives, while introducing the first ever Mews Fest Fringe. Sponsored by AO Arena, this year’s event is also fundraising for Forever Manchester, with collection buckets across the site and a raffle prize offering the chance to win two tickets to see Lily Allen at the arena next month.

As always, Mews Fest will showcase live performances across Deansgate Mews, with venues including Lion’s Den, Low Four Studios and The Mews Bar hosting a packed programme of bands and DJs throughout the weekend. Visitors can expect a mix of outdoor performances and intimate indoor sets celebrating Manchester’s independent music scene, with simple bag checks in place on arrival in line with event security guidance.

New for this year, the Mews Fest Fringe will take over Unit 5 inside the main warehouse from 12pm to 7pm on Saturday and Sunday, creating a relaxed indoor hub focused on music, art and independent retail. Alongside DJs and seating areas, the Fringe space will feature market stalls from bands selling merchandise, local artists, record sellers and makers, with names including Hydra Vinyl, Toni Miller Paints, Rosedale Botanics and Manchester sketch artist Sophie Nixon.

Families can also get involved in the Fringe’s interactive Chaos Canvas installation, which transforms an entire white painted room into a collaborative artwork across the weekend. Thousands of crayons will be available for visitors of all ages to draw directly onto the walls, creating a constantly evolving piece shaped by the people passing through the space. Free badge making workshops and kids guitar decorating sessions will also run across the weekend.

Outside, Mini Mews Fest returns on Saturday from 12pm to 4pm with free family activities taking place beside the Village Hall, including nature crown making and an edible trail designed for younger visitors. The popular Little Northerners Play Space will also remain open throughout the weekend for families looking for a quieter space to unwind between activities.

Elsewhere, food and drink venues will be running throughout the festival weekend. Another Hand will operate as usual on Friday and Saturday before moving onto its outdoor terrace on Sunday for flatbreads if the weather holds up, while Siam Smiles will add BBQ specials alongside its regular menu across Saturday and Sunday.

At The Mews Bar, visitors can expect small plates, wine, cocktails and cheese boards throughout the weekend, while The Lion’s Den is expanding its outdoor bar offering onto its terrace beside the stage area. Low Four Studios will also keep its bar open throughout performances, while Tabitha’s serves food across the full weekend.

Festivalgoers will also get the first look at new bar Frank’s, which opens for the first time during Mews Fest serving beers and cocktails, alongside a special pop up from Amo by Salvi’s ahead of its upcoming launch on Deansgate Mews. The concept will serve focaccia sandwiches, cannoli, coffee, spritzes and a donut collaboration with Baby Mayhem across the weekend.

Mews Fest, Mini Mews Fest and the new Mews Fest Fringe are free to attend.

Manchester Jazz Festival and Forsyth Music Shop are back with the return of the much-loved piano trail, bringing music to the streets once again as 18 freely accessible pianos are placed across Greater Manchester this spring.

Launching on International Piano Day 29th March and running until 31st May, the mjf piano trail will see pianos dotted across the city region, including one at Great Northern, inviting passers-by of all ages and abilities to sit down and play.

As the UK’s largest piano trail, the mission is simple: to encourage everyone to come together and share in the joy of music-making. Whether you’re a seasoned pianist or just fancy having a go, everyone is welcome to take part.

In collaboration with Forsyth Music Shop and Yamaha, the 2026 trail also marks the return of the competition to discover Manchester’s hidden musical talent, with a range of prizes set to be announced soon.

There are no rules when it comes to what you play; from original compositions to timeless favourites, jazz or otherwise, it’s all about getting creative, having fun and making music in and for the city.

Launch Event
Join the team for the official launch at Trafford Palazzo on Sunday 29th March, 2PM-3PM, featuring performances from last year’s piano trail winner and students from Trafford Youth Music Services. This is a free, drop-in event.

Play It Forward: Street Piano Fund
This year also introduces the Play It Forward: Street Piano Fund campaign, launched in partnership with Forsyth Music Shop. The initiative aims to grow the piano trail across Greater Manchester, bringing more instruments to more communities year-round and ensuring even more people can experience the joy of playing.

Piano Walking Tours Return
Back by popular demand, the piano walking tours return on Sunday 17th and Sunday 24th May in collaboration with Free Manchester Walking Tours. Led by Josh, the tours explore the trail across the city centre, taking in theatres, galleries and hidden gems, alongside pop-up performances from genre-blending collective Sherpa K.

For more information and updates, follow @manchesterjazzfestival on social media.
